Mayne Island
Mayne Island is located on the opposite shore of Active Pass from Galiano Island and has a rich and
colourful history dating back to the gold rush years. Photographers will be delighted with the many
historic buildings in Miners Bay and Village Bay as well as the 1892 Springwater Lodge. Other sites of
interest are the St. Mary Magdalene Church and its adjoining cemetery which overlooks Active Pass, the
1885 Georgina Point Lighthouse and a small museum displaying local artifacts - the 1896 Plumper Pass
Lock-Up.
Things to do on Mayne Island:
- Take a sightseeing cruise or charter a fishing boat. Kayak, canoe, or scuba dive in the bays; equipment can be rented on the Island.
- Picnic at Bennett Bay Beach, hike through the forest in Mount Parke Regional Park, the highest point on the Island. Great views of Active Pass and the surrounding Gulf Islands.
- Enjoy the volleyball, horseshoe pitch, picnic and beach facilities at Dinner Bay Community Park.
- Follow the trail leading to the beautiful swimming beach at Campbell Bay, just one of many public beaches that offer swimming in warm, sheltered waters. At Campbell Bay, a trail leads to a beach where you can explore sandstone caves, or spend an afternoon at Bennett Bay beach, then visit the Island's studios and galleries.
- Cycle the Island's roadways past bays and along the coastline; allow at least five hours for a complete tour.
- Browse through the little shops in Miners Bay and explore local history at the museum, which was once a jail, and at the Agricultural Hall, the site of the oldest fall fair on the Gulf Islands.
- Boaters can dock at the government wharf at Miners Bay and walk into the village or dock at Horton Bay.
Accommodations on Mayne Island include vacation cottages, bed & breakfast
